Ipswich fans watched their team make it consecutive wins for the first time this season.

Meanwhile, Newcastle supporters couldn’t believe what they were watching, as their team played the game out as though nothing of substance depended on it.

The home support was understandably ecstatic but what exactly did they make of the match, the visiting team, and the Newcastle fans?

Comments from Ipswich fans via various message Ipswich Town message boards:

‘That London to Edinburgh train stopping at Peterborough to pick up Newcastle fans???…… feel sorry for those other passengers tonight. The “quiet coach” would be the place to be!’

‘I was surprised at how poor they (Newcastle) were today. Based on that performance there have been far better teams at Portman Road this season.’

‘They are going to have to spend a lot of money if they want to stay up next season.’

‘We outplayed them today. If I was a Geordie I’d be embarrassed by how much we played them off the park given the difference in budgets.’

‘No doubt if Sears or Didz keep scoring the last few games, Newcastle will be in for them this summer.’

‘A lot of talk has gone into how well we did. But I haven’t seen it mentioned as to how well we contained shelvey in the middle of the park.

He looked useless apart from that one proper naughty pass in the first half from the outside of his right boot he was totally ineffective. Matched up with an appaling goalkeeping display from them also.’

‘We stopped Shelvey brilliantly. Today’s game was an exercise in stopping the opponent without stifling ourselves at any point.’

‘Geordies moaning about the ref. They saw things a bit differently to me!’

‘Full ground (sort of) having fellow fans around me singing, brilliant away end, battling in your face passionate football, goals, attacking, keeper slip ups, goals, attacking, fantastic full backs up and down, goals shots attacking.

It was like when someone close to you passes away, then you have that dream about 5/6 months later and you feel like there back with you again for just that small amount of time.

Ipswich were back today, and I was in a happy place. I loved that.’

‘More songs about Daryl Murphy, who handed in a transfer request, than the manager. Doesn’t sit right with me.’

‘Newcastle were an odd side really. A LOT of recognisable names, a lot of money spent, a manager too good for this league yet they didn’t click at all.

They sat off, didn’t press us, didn’t look great in possession and only had two or three decent chances, one of which they scored.

As much as I don’t like people scoring against us, it was oddly satisfying seeing Daryl Murphy’s name come up on the scoreboard again.’

‘It was brilliant.

I nearly broke my ankle celebrating the first goal, my leg went through the back of the seats.

Then I rolled my ankle running down the stairs for the second one then hugged some random people, same for the third, ran down the stairs jumped on the back of someone then bear hugged some guy on the way back.

Was great to see PR nearly full with a good atmosphere and a great performance, anyone would have thought it was a top of the table clash.’

‘At the end of today’s game, Smith, who’d only been on for 10 minutes went round all the stands applauding the fans, and Chambers yet again did his usual fist pump.

You have to respect the players who play for town, most (if not all) have passion. Compare it to some other clubs – Arsenal, Newcastle, Villa who’s players do not play with passion.’

‘Credit where credits due when the Nufc fans were singing they were pretty loud as well. Was like the games from 10 or 15 years back again today.’

‘They were loud at 0-0 and again at 1-1. But I thought they were poor when they were behind, and just gave up on their team.’

‘Isn’t this the general story of football support. Let’s face it we weren’t mental until it went 3-1.’

‘Generally yes – but the contrast was stark – more so than with most other vocal sets of fans. Surprising considering they are second – clearly just disappointed they hadn’t wrapped up the league by Christmas.’

‘They (Newcastle) are on a poor run and getting the serious jitters now.’

‘Don’t spoil it, Newcastle are world beaters and their manager is a tactical genius. We beat a modern day equivalent of an AC Milan captained by Franco Baresi.’

Some very miserable looking Newcastle fans at Wetherby Sevices.

A great day from start to finish.’

‘Telling that Newcastle came for an open game rather than killing it like most teams this season. That obviously helped us.’

‘What an atmosphere, sounds more like St James Park.’

‘See what can happen when we’re not worrying about relegation, that’s how we play when we are higher in the table and not looking over our shoulder.

Great game of football today, we made Newcastle look very ordinary.’

‘Good result…..probably down to them feeling the pressure and bottling it a little and us having nothing to play for.’

‘Really good performance. Newcastle were poor, but we had the bit between the teeth. So deserved.’

Sums it up really well and you can’t help but feel happy for the Ipswich fan who not only have had an awful time, but appear stuck with Mackem Mick…..
Test of character is how you deal with adversity.
This game is now gone, so time for these players to be bigger, fight, stand up, swagger, and play for the shirt, and show why they have earned it..

It doesnt take a genius to work out that by stopping Shelvey you limit us to scraps. We really struggled during his suspension and teams have worked this out now !

I kinda expected the reaction to be the way it was.

They seem to think they controlled/managed us into the bad performance…
The reality is we performed so badly and lacked so much organization that we made them look half decent.
With the exception of one or two moves, which came off for them due to our disastrously wonky defending and a poor Karl Darlo performance, they were still a bang average championship level side.
If their keeper hadn’t been on such good form, we probably still would beaten them even though we played the worst game of our season.

Might have been interesting had Ritchie not missed the first half sitter Dummett put on a plate for him. Not picking on Ritchie mind he’s been outstanding this season but just saying
