Ipswich 3 Newcastle 1 – Monday 17 April 2017 3pm
We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle:
“Poor result, players looked on their last legs at times today (mebbies a couple of signings in Jan would’ve helped).
“Rafa is squeezing what he can out of this squad but it remains to be seen what’s actually left to squeeze.
“Fingers crossed for decent result from our point of view at teatime (Huddersfield).
“Still think we’ll get promoted but we’re doing it the hard way!”
“We were out-fought and out-played today, we had no shape at any part in the game and played brainless and complacent football.
“We were a shambles today, you’d think it was them who was going for promotion and us on an end of season jolly.
“Rafa was right when he said April would be crucial, I just didn’t think he meant like this.
“The Ipswich fans were singing “Premier League, you’re having a laugh” at the end but really the joke is on them.
“They’ve seen what sort of team we have got and what it takes to beat us but two more wins out of three games and we are up.
“Yes, we are shaking our heads in bemusement all the way to the Premier League.”
“Well we might get to Wembley!!!!!!.
“We were awful.
“We are choking, no leaders, no one dragging people about.
“Ours to lose still but can’t see who is gonna drag us over the line.”
Leazes Park Ender:
“When Rafa Benitez agreed to stay at Newcastle Utd last summer he was taking a big gamble with his stunning CV and reputation as one of the best managers in the game.
“All seemed well for months. Back in February/March we won back to back games at Brighton and Huddersfield. The hard work seemingly looked done.
“Then came that Leeds game. We were about ten seconds of moving to 87 points. Now, we have witnessed a terrible capitulation at Portman Road.
“The manager, no matter who they are, are ultimately accountable for the performances and the results. Rafa has to pull something out the bag here and his players have got to wake up.
“It could be going to the wire. Simply not good enough today.
“We have the chance to go again but the pressure is on. It’s astonishingly cruel on the fans.”
“Rafa Benitez may bring some much needed stability and maybe some success.
“However, his year in the Championship will be remembered as pretty poor to say the least.
“In fact this whole season, assuming promotion does come, may as well be forgotten asap as it has been an absolute slog from start to finish.
“Rafa’s team selections and tactics have had us playing with the handbrake on all season. Referees have been trying to burst our tyres time after time after time.
“We will hopefully get over the finish line but it will be far from pretty or as straightforward as it should have been.
“Been beaten to the line by a team like Brighton is like an Aston Martin getting done by a Ford Focus.
“Utter garbage all round.”
“Shocking performance and yet another game in the run-in where we just simply didn’t turn up, so different to Friday night.
“There was a lot of head shaking amongst the Newcastle fans today, we’re all finding it a bit hard to believe what is happening!
“Thankfully down to just 3 games to go and hopefully not enough matches left for Huddersfield to catch us…”
‘It’s the simple things.
And at the minute, we don’t do them.’
“How long must a game go on for, when the tactics are failing miserably, for a manager to change things?”
