Newcastle United fans were denied the pleasure of seeing Gabriel Obertan in action 10 days ago.

Newcastle edged a 2-1 win over Wigan but despite the visitors using all three subs he remained on the bench.

Wigan are in desperate trouble and Gabriel Obertan was given only his fourth Championship start on Saturday, after arriving as a free agent in January.

The winger coming up with only the third league goal of his career in England, having made his first appearance for Manchester United back in 2009.

Obertan scored a right foot volley and set up the second goal (watch both below) of a 3-2 win over Rotherham with a fine run and pass, this though still leaves Wigan seven points from safety as rival clubs won as well.

The performance was enough to see Gabriel Obertan named in the EFL Team of the Week.

Official EFL write-up:

‘Gabriel Obertan scored one goal and made another as Wigan earned a priceless three points at home to Rotherham United, coming from behind twice to win 3-2.

The French winger grabbed his first goal for the club, and teed up Alex Gilbey for the second equaliser, to keep the Latics in the hunt for Sky Bet Championship survival. ‘
