Carlos Carvalhal says he had a plan to beat Newcastle and his players ‘did it absolutely fantastically’.
After wasting what he believed to be ‘three very clear chances, the Sheffield Wednesday boss saw his team score the opener after Newcastle opened the second-half the better team.
Jonjo Shelvey scored a very late consolation but Carlos Carvalhal still though that his players ‘deserved more from the beautiful situations we created’.
After only one win in five games, the Owls returned to a play-off spot, with Carvalhal saying ‘we we win together and we lose together’.
Summing up the game, he says ‘we win in an important moment against the best team in the competition’.
As for Newcastle, this was only the second league defeat since 2 January when NUFC lost at Blackburn.
With both Huddersfield and Reading losing as well today, no real lasting damage for Newcastle, but Rafa Benitez will be expecting better when Leeds come to Tyneside on Friday night.
“It is three points but this kind of game is more than three points, when you play the best team in the competition. When you perform like that after the problems we have had.
“We had a plan for this game and they (the team) did it absolutely fantastically.
“We created a lot of problems for Newcastle and on the break (in the first half) we had three very clear chances.
“Then we achieve a goal when Newcastle are in the game a little bit more than the first half.
“This is football – but we deserved to win. My players ran, they fight a lot and they play with quality.
“Two good headers but I think we deserved more from the beautiful situations we created.
“We win together and we lose together.
“Today we win in an important moment against the best team in the competition.”
