Astonishing results after Newcastle fans asked which 3 players should have made PFA team of the year

The PFA Championship team of the year produced an interesting reaction on Thursday when it was announced, with three Newcastle players included.

The full team is below but Dwight Gayle, Jonjo Shelvey and Jamaal Lascelles were chosen by their fellow professionals in the Championship’s best 11 players.

Much debate about the team and especially NUFC Captain Jamaal Lascelles making the side, so we decided to ask you who you would have nominated for the PFA Championship team of the year.

The results couldn’t have been more clear cut – see them below.

David Stockdale (Brighton)

Bruno (Brighton)

Lewis Dunk (Brighton)

Jamaal Lascelles (Newcastle)

Ryan Sessegnon (Fulham)

Tom Cairney (Fulham)

Anthony Knockaert (Brighton)

Aaron Mooy (Huddersfield)

Jonjo Shelvey (Newcastle)

Dwight Gayle (Newcastle)

Chris Wood (Leeds United)

We asked you to pick the three Newcastle players (the choice was narrowed down to the 16 who have started at least 10 Championship matches this season) you would have put forward for this PFA Championship team of the year.

This is the percentage of Newcastle supporters who voted for each one:

78% Matt Ritchie

75% Ciaran Clark

63% Jonjo Shelvey

60% Dwight Gayle

9% Karl Darlow

5% Isaac Hayden

4% Paul Dummett

2% DeAndre Yedlin

2% Jamaal Lascelles

1% Christian Atsu

1% Ayoze Perez

0% Jack Colback

0% Vurnon Anita

0% Yoan Gouffran

0% Chancel Mbemba

0% Mohamed Diame

The bottom line is that 92% of all votes were spread around only four players – Ritchie, Clark, Shelvey and Gayle.

Karl Darlow a very distant fifth and the rest, including Jamaal Lascelles, nowhere.

This reinforcing more than ever that Newcastle fans see a small group of players having been responsible for Newcastle being on the verge of the Premier League.

(Talking about the selection on The Mag on Thursday night, Jonathan Drape-Comyn wrote about how maybe the PFA choice of team isn’t maybe based on the best evidence.)
