Shola Ameobi, from 12 yards, what could possibly go wrong.

Saturday saw Kevin Nolan select the former Newcastle United striker to lead the line, as Notts County attempted to drag themselves further away from the drop.

Up against relegation rivals Hartlepool, County were awarded a penalty after 28 minutes.

Having had a flawless record during all those years at St James Park, up stepped Shola Ameobi…and his poor effort was touched onto the post and saved! (Watch it below)

The sides going in 0-0 at the break but only two minutes later Shola atoned for his surprise penalty miss.

Outpacing (honestly!) the defence he ran onto the through ball and finished right footed past the keeper to put Notts County ahead.

Grant made it 2-0 to Nolan’s team with 20 minutes remaining, only for an own goal on 78 minutes giving the revitalised (other) Magpies some nervous moments.

The 2-1 win puts Notts County four places and eight points above the drop – Kevin Nolan giving late substitute appearances to former Newcastle due Alan Smith and Adam Campbell.

Shola’s goal came just over a year since his last one in March 2016, scoring in a 2-1 win for Fleetwood over Gillingham.
