Huddersfield 1 Newcastle 3  – Saturday 4 March 5.30pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle:

Leazes Park Ender:

“My word, has Mr Benitez earned his corn this week.

“A seismic result there tonight in Huddersfield.

“A win that was was secured with just 24 per cent possession and six shots on goal, but hey they all count.

“When it’s really mattered, the manager and the players have really pulled it out of the hat. Every single Newcastle fan will know tonight we have one foot in the Premier League.

“A penalty award got us up and running and then Murphy with a clever finish from what appears to be a goalkeeping error.

“A spot-kick to the home side jangled nerves, a softish award really.

“Gayle enters the fray and with them pushing on the high ball has induced the error and he won’t score an easier goal.

“Pre-match build up marred by a statement saying Newcastle fans would not be allowed in any pubs in the town centre after the game. Not sure what to make of that.”

Jamie Smith:

“What a week!

“For so long these fixtures have been pointed out as our likely Achilles heel by the haters, naysayers and mackems (I wonder how many pages they racked up about us on their obsessive message board tonight).

“Instead, our imperious away form has come through again as another set of pretenders were summarily dismissed.

Brighton’s collapse at the City Ground could suggest we’ve knocked their stride a la Norwich. Hopefully the Terriers suffer a similar wobble.

“Another tough prospect at Reading on Tuesday but with an 11 point gap now to third, it seems there’s only one place we’re heading for next season.”

George Stainsby:

“6 (points) from 6 that we would all have said yes please to.

“Another half of soaking up pressure.

“Yes, we’ll need to rebuild next year, no matter what happens.

“But can we enjoy this a bit, please?!!”

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“My neutral mate called the 3-1, 10 minutes in.

“I was less certain – but a fantastic win of course. The centre-backs were superb again.

“If we win the next two, only an improbable collapse will see us not gain promotion.

“Howay the lads!”

Toon Bano:

“That is one of the best defensive performances away from home that you will ever see.

“That third goal was an absolute classic – can’t stop laughing.

“We won’t miss the refs, as was proven AGAIN with that ridiculous penalty against Shelvey – but we will miss scoring goals like that.

“Bye bye Championship.”

Paul Patterson:

“Proof that stats mean nothing.

“Missions one and two completed.

“Onto the third we go.”

Nat Seaton:

“Maybe a bit lucky pen to get us on our way but after that, thought it was a great away team performance.

“Confidence seems to have returned and can’t wait to go to Reading on Tuesday.

“11 point gap to third, starting to get a bit excited!!!”

Jamie Swan

“Thou shalt not PASS!

“Unbelievable result and determination. Had a game plan and it worked.

“Was a tough watch and Town had so much of the ball that it always felt like something would give.

“Apart from Shelvey giving away the penalty, nothing did.

“I think that Huddersfield are a very decent team, better than most we’ve played in my opinion – so delighted to get revenge for the home loss.

“One step closer – enjoy tonight!”

Ben Cooper:

“Great result, that is the bottom line.

“In the second half we were far too deep and I was impressed by the way Huddersfield played – but they had little up front and once we had gone 2-0 up I knew we would win.

“Even after we had gifted them a goal, probably one penalty each that might not have been given, i still didnt think they would score again.

“The moment of the match for me was with 10 minutes to go, exchange of passes between Ritchie and Dummett, get a decent ball in, Dummett puts it in the stand. Brilliant. At least he defended well.

“Again, Lascelles and Clark were massive today. Bring on Reading.”
