The Newcastle team v Birmingham has just been announced.

Rafa Benitez making 4 changes from the side that lost 3-1 to Fuham.

The United boss had already confirmed that Ciaran Clark and DeAndre Yedlin wouldn’t be involved until at least after this upcoming international break.

Hanley replaces the injured Clark but the big news is that both Shelvey and Gayle have been left out!

Murphy replaces Gayle up front with Perez getting a game in behind him, whilst Gouffran comes back in on the left. Gayle, Atsu and Shelvey all dropping to the bench.

Big call is Rafa putting Mohamed Diame in the middle of the pitch with Colback.

After announcing the team, the club indicated that Shelvey having been ill this week has contributed to the decision to relegate him to a place amongst the subs.

One thing with Rafa Benitez, he isn’t scared of making big calls in his team selection.

Newcastle United:

Darlow, Anita, Lascelles, Hanley, Dummett, Ritchie, Diame, Colback, Gouffran, Perez, Murphy

Subs:

Elliot, Gamez, Mbemba, Shelvey, Atsu, Gayle, Mitrovic

Shelves HASNT been dropped. If you read the NUFC a tweet you will see he has been suffering with illness this week.

More disengenuous click bait headlines from themag to drive up revenue from the ever increasing number of dodgy ads on this site.

  • Carlo Ancelotti

    Awful

  • David Johnstone

‘Dropped’ is an inflammatory word. Shelvey has been ill and Gayle is making his way back from the hamstring injury. Sensible squad management is what I can see.

    • Carlo Ancelotti

      are you the club Doctor

      • David Johnstone

        Yes

    • Taz

So if shelvey is ill why is he on the bench? How ill do you have to be not to play and then be asked to play I’m confused is he ill or isn’t he…….?

  • steve

That’s quite possibly the worst Newcastle line up of my lifetime.

    • Jimblag23

      Are you joking?

      • steve

Nope at 28 years of age I don’t think I’ve seen a worse 11 players named on the teamsheet.

        • steve

          League cup aside

          • Jimblag23

That’s what I was going to say.

        • Munich Mag

Give yer heed a shake then and get back on play station

    • Alex

      Happy 7th birthday.

    • Toon Wolf

Could can’t be very old then!

  • Jimblag23

Hopefully the lads will have enough to still get the valuable 3 points.
    Toon toon!!!

    • Taz

Hope, it’s a shame that is what it’s boiled down to

  • Alex

Shelvey, Atsu and Gayle could cause havoc in the last 30 minutes.

    • rory

If they are given that long. Unlikely knowing Benitez.

  • rory

Oh God, Diame and Colback in central midfield, Anita and Dummett as full-backs, Hanley and Lascelles as centre-back and Perez! Yet again our bench contains the most quality. Understand Shelvey being ill, but Atsu, Mitro and Mbemba should all be in the team. Plus would still pick Gamez over Anita or Dummett. Sorry for literally listing the team again but it’s awful.

    • Jimblag23

Murphy has been more effective than Mitro recently and tbh Atsu hasn’t set the world alight recently.
It’s risky of Rafa, I’ll agree, but the alternatives aren’t a dead cert.
Fully fit Shelvey and Gayle would make the difference however.

  • Taz

Fk me…. Did I read colback( the useless tw@ and diame in central midfield) ..is someone smoking crack at the toon. I hope the depressed state I am just about to enter for 90 mins is proved wrong. There has to be better options, but that’s probably why I’m not a manager … I live in hope ?
