The Championship run-in is gathering pace and with the finishing line almost in sight, how difficult is the run-in for Newcastle United and their competitors?
Ben Mayhew’s excellent site has produced a table (see below) showing the remaining fixtures for all 24 club.
He has highlighted out the fixtures where each club is playing an opposition where they had one of their easiest 10 games this season.
Likewise the 10 toughest oppositions they have previously faced this season.
For Newcastle, their last nine matches features four opponents who proved easy meat earlier this campaign – Wigan, Ipswich, Leeds and Barnsley. In comparison, Brighton also have four of these type of matches and Huddersfield three.
As for opposition teams where Newcastle have struggled, these games that are left over feature just one – Sheffield Wednesday, who beat NUFC at St James Park 1-0. Brighton have two such games and Huddersfield one.
Looking at the league positions of remaining opponents is also very interesting.
Newcastle face four clubs in the bottom 10 and three who currently are top 10.
Brighton have six bottom 10 clubs to play and only two from the top 10.
As for Huddersfield, it is five from the bottom 10 and four from the top 10.
On the face of it, it looks as though on paper, that Brighton have the easiest run-in and Newcastle & Huddersfield arguably very similar remaining fixtures in terms of how difficult they look.
It all points to it going to the wire…
Not much to choose!
