Three former Newcastle United players have had excellent weekends, unlike the current team experienced against Fulham on Saturday.

Rafa Benitez watched his players disappoint in the 3-1 defeat by the Cottagers but on the other side of the Channel, three outcasts were doing well.

Having finally settled back in France, via Roma, Mapou Yanga-M’Biwa had a stroll in the park as Lyon beat Toulouse 4-0.

This cements them in fourth place in Ligue 1 and of course they are through to the later stages of the Europa League having smashed  Tim Krul and AZ Alkmaar 11-2 o aggregate, now awaiting the second leg of the next round this week, having beaten Yanga-M’biwa’s former Italian club 4-2 at home in the first leg.

The one-time Newcastle central defender has been named in L’Equipe’s team of the week and joining him are two more former Newcastle players.

Helped by the arrival of Dimitri Payet in January, Marseille are now fifth in the French top division.

This weekend saw them dispatch Angers 3-0, Florian Thauvin(***) scored the first and third goals, with Remy Cabella getting the second.

The first two goals featuring assists from Payet.

That makes it 10 goals in 27 league starts for Thauvin this season and both he and Cabella also make the L’Equipe Ligue 1 team of the week.

(***Thauvin is still technically a Newcastle player but is widely reported to have already passed the number of appearances needed to trigger the clause that will ensure a permanent move this summer)
