The results of the Newcastle v Aston Villa player ratings by fans.

It is definitely a team/squad effort this season but Monday night saw once again the club’s best and most reliable players as the top performers.

Newcastle fans almost take Ciaran Clark (7.7) for granted now, the centre-half rarely, if ever, putting a foot wrong and once again rated by supporters as NUFC’s best player against his old club.

The main support acts were Karl Darlow (7.1) and Jonjo Shelvey (7.0), the keeper having little to do but looking confident after his howler at Norwich, plus making an outstanding stop from Villa’s best chance when two goals up. Shelvey as usual behind anything good going forward.

As for weaknesses, Dwight Gayle (4.5) clearly wasn’t anywhere near his usual self and injury forced him of after half an hour.

Otherwise, it was left to Mohamed Diame (5.5) and Yoan Gouffran (6.0) to be once again the players who fans were expecting more from.

Otherwise, it was steady performers all round.

The rest of the back five (Dummett, Lascelles and Yedlin) all scored 6.8 as another clean sheet was registered and the right-back often looked Newcastle’s biggest threat going forward.

Matt Ritchie (6.6) put in a good shift and Jack Colback (6.5) put in a better performance than has become the norm for him.

Credit to Mitrovic (6.5) as well, the striker coming on and helping Newcastle to look a better team, he also seemed a bit more mobile!
