Stuart Pearce considers whether Newcastle have the right promotion credentials

Stuart Pearce has been looking at Newcastle United’s promotion credentials on this 17 match promotion run-in.

The former Newcastle and England defender thinks United have got the right ‘tools’ to get back into the Premier League.

Pearce name checks both the players (‘probably the strongest squad in the league’) and the supporters (‘home and away they have absolutely massive numbers’) as reasons for being confident.

However, he also has a word of warning, saying that the Championship is ‘an unforgiving league’ and that you simply have ‘got to keep going and going’.

There have been many dramatic collapses by clubs going for promotion to the Premier League, as well as late runs that have seen surprise teams go up.

The competitive nature of the Championship was summed up in an article on The Mag yesterday (Wednesday), where despite negativity from many Newcastle fans about the recent matches, the Championship form table going back to the end of December showed Newcastle at the very top (see it HERE).

The next three and a half weeks sees a tough seven game schedule (see below) with Newcastle having five of those matches away from home, including playing away at all three of the other clubs in the top four.

As Stuart Pearce says; ‘no easy games’.

Stuart Pearce speaking to Sky Sports:

“They have got the squad, which is probably the strongest squad in the league.

“The Newcastle United fanbase is sensational and we know home and away they have absolutely massive numbers.

“But it is an unforgiving league and you have got to keep going and keep going – 46 matches and it is a tough league to keep winning in – no easy games.

“However, I think that they have got the tools to get out of this league without a doubt – I think they will go up automatically.”
