Paul Lambert thinks Newcastle United are top of the league ‘on merit’, rather than simple luck.
However, he also believes that there is one overwhelming reason for them being favourites to be Championship winners with 17 matches to go
Paul Lambert says that Newcastle have ‘bought an awful lot of players on big big money, so you expect them to be up there’.
A lot of other clubs have had very expensive squads when relegated and/or spent big money when in the Championship – but that hasn’t always equalled success.
Very few relegated clubs have gone straight back up and Wolves’ near neighbours Aston Villa are a prime example of money not necessarily equalling points.
Lambert adds ‘Newcastle will get out of the league because of the finances they have got and the money they have spent’.
As for Rafa Benitez, the Wolves Manager says that he has never come up against one of his teams nor met him personally, so it will be a first for him at Molineux on Saturday afternoon.
Namechecking the likes of Liverpool, Real Madrid and Valencia, Paul Lambert says that with his CV, Rafa has ‘been there, seen it and done it’.
The Wolves Manager thinks that Rafa Benitez also sees Newcastle United as ‘a big club’ with the potential to succeed.
“I think they’re up there on merit and I still think that Newcastle will get out of the league because of the finances they’ve got and the money they’ve spent.
“They’ve bought an awful lot of players on big money, so you expect them to be up there.
“If Newcastle were outside the top six it would be a major surprise, so you expect them to be there.
“I’ve never met Rafa and never had a game against him.
“His managerial career has been very good, at big clubs like Real Madrid, Liverpool, Inter and Valencia. He’s been there, seen it and done it.
“Being at Newcastle he obviously sees it as a big club that should go back up, or else he wouldn’t have gone there in the first place.”
