Newcastle 1 Derby 0  –  Saturday 4 February 2017 3pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle:

Leazes Park Ender:

“Oh boy, was that a narrow win.

“Cheers to Tom Ince for missing that sitter and Yedlin’s goal line clearance deep into stoppage time.

“It’s a shame Newcastle couldn’t have put that game to bed really. We’ll take 1-0 though and these streaky ones still offer the three precious points.

“Nineteen shots in the game and it is now Ritchie tapping a rich seam.”

Jamie Smith:

“Very big result. I have hopes that tomorrow’s games could turn this into an excellent weekend.

“There’s no time for reflection this month though.

“Two tricky away games coming up and they just keep coming this month.

“More of this please to get on course for the Prem.

“Diame a welcome return.”

Paul Lyon:

“Huge improvement from Wednesday, great application from players & fans alike.

“Don’t normally bemoan the referee but that guy today was another level of poor. He spoilt the game in my opinion.

“3 hard fought points gratefully received.

“Always nice to be on the right end of the scoreline of a game like today’s.

“Must also say great effort by those organising the Gallowgate Flags and the NUFC Fans Foodbank initiative.”

Nat Seaton:

“A nervous win.

“Hard to believe we are top of the league but I’ll take it.

“A full week until next match, hopefully regrouped and refreshed.”

Ben Cooper:

“Much better all round and looks like everyone listened to Rafa’s tub-thump.

“Quite right too, as supporters it means more to us than it does to anyone and I think people showed it today.

“Nice to see Steve McClaren can’t win at SJP no matter which team he manages and we completely deserved it today.

“A well deserved win  and a very welcome one.”

Toon Bano:

“That game summed up our Championship season so far.

“Nervous, lacking control of the situation, making things way harder for ourselves then we need to…but in the end come out on top due to our superior individual quality.

“Like it or not we aren’t a great ‘side’. We have better players. We really need to improve big time with the fixtures we have to come. Some massive away games.

“I’ll take scraping over the line but my heart might not be able to!!!”

Paul Patterson:

“Poor showing on the whole once again.

“Ref poor and Mitrovic shocking.

“Great support for Rafa but the players need to turn up more often.”

Jamie Swan

“Great result (which we nearly blew again).

“Great to be top of the league, hopefully some baby steps towards putting a run together.

“It would have been a travesty if we had blown it today having blew our beans on numerous occasions in front of goal.

“Sadly, Mitro taking a swing at the cow’s arse with his banjo and missing, being the icing on the profligate cake.

“Derby did very little but two or three dangerous balls undid us, Ince missing the same cow’s arse with a double bass and the last gasp clearance from my MOTM Yedlin nearly induced spontaneous combustion.

“Much better than against QPR.

“ God speed our number 9 back – happy weekend.”

Scott:

“Solid win and a ‘do what we had to do’ win.

“Massive 3 points after the last few days, onto the next.

“Could be a big win for us this.

“Need Gayle back to give us that pace up front.”
