When it comes to TV viewers there is little doubt just who punters are interested in watching when it comes to Championship football.

As well as posting the biggest home crowds in the division, plus travellers on the road, Newcastle United are packing them in around the TV screens.

After Monday night, official figures show that Newcastle have been responsible for nine of the ten highest Championship TV audiences this season.

As well as 50,000+ inside St James Park, 427,000 tuned in to watch Newcastle v Aston Villa, despite Sutton v Arsenal being shown at the same time on BBC.

This was the eighth highest number of TV viewers for the second tier this campaign.

Newcastle have the six highest figures this season and nine of the top 10, only the Yorkshire derby featuring Barnsley v Leeds breaks a perfect sequence.

Leeds v Newcastle with 826,000 watching on their TVs was the very highest so far and the Boxing Day clash with Sheffield Wednesday in second place.

With a lot of talk about whether Newcastle or Aston Villa are the ‘biggest’ club, paying customers (those actually going to matches or paying TV subscriptions) are voting with their feet/wallets.

The only two Villa matches to make this top 10 are those against Newcastle.

This strongly suggests that Sky Sports bosses have blundered by choosing to screen more Villa matches than those of any other Championship club, including Newcastle.

League position is also irrelevant because as we all know, if Newcastle were battling relegation like Villa are, there would be even more TV neutrals tuning in to watch our pain!

Top 10 biggest Live TV audiences in the Championship so far:

826,00 Leeds v Newcastle

598,000 Newcastle v Sheffield Wednesday

584,000 Blackburn v Newcastle

531,000 Fulham v Newcastle

524,000 Aston Villa v Newcastle

444,000 Nottingham Forest v Newcastle

443,000 Barnsley v Leeds

427,000 Newcastle v Aston Villa

405,000 Wolves v Newcastle

392,000 Newcastle v QPR
