Bristol City boss Lee Johnson was understandably happy with the Saturday afternoon efforts of his players.

However, he might have got a little bit carried away with the events of the day when speaking afterwards.

Seeing his players go in at the break two goals up and then come away with a point after a fightback by the home side, he declared ‘Newcastle couldn’t live with some of our football in the first half’.

Whilst there was nothing for Newcastle fans to smile about during that opening 45 minutes, they might be a little bit amused by Lee Johnson after the game.

The two goals kind of summed up that first half, with a combination of the match officials and Newcastle United being the architects of NUFC’s downfall, rather than a Brazil-like exhibition of Samba football by the visitors.

Wilbraham looked a mile offside for the first and then it was a comedy of errors between Darlow and Dummett for the second.

Lee Johnson can be well pleased with the result and effort of his players but Newcastle did their level best to make them look like a decent football side.

Lee Johnson:

“We’ve come to top of the league and had a real go.

“Newcastle couldn’t live with some of our football in the first half and then we have had to do the basics well.

“They have some brilliant players and we had to roll our sleeves up and show a good attitude. That is probably the most pleasing aspect for me.

“The two or three thousand supporters who made the journey up here will have seen how committed the players are.

“It was a good day for the club; the players, the staff and the supporters all came together and showed what can be achieved when there is a positive mind-set.

“There has been a lot of negativity around this past week and this was the best way to respond.

“I’ve told the players they have set a standard that now has to be maintained.

“I needed eleven busy bees out there and so selected a side that would run around for 90 minutes and work hard.

“That work rate was tremendous and that is what you need when you come to a place like this and play against the top team in the league.

“I said to the players in the dressing room that I expect to see that standard in every game now. For those who did not play today, or who came on in the second half, that is the level of work rate I want to see as a minimum requirement.

“If anyone drops below that, then they will be hauled off and I’ll put on people with energy who are full of running.”
