Brighton 1 Newcastle 2  – Tuesday 28 February 7.45pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle:

Leazes Park Ender:

“The ridiculous and the sublime on show tonight.

“It may well be pancake day, but Rafa and his players have finished the night anything but flat. Get in there!

“It’s a win hewn from a side that can show bags of character when they put their collective minds to it. The game was always going to be a tough assignment but 19 shots on goal, eight on target, tells its own story.

“First the ridiculous. The softest of penalties to the home side. An awful decision. Then Mo Diame, with a moment of luck, let’s face it, and it loops in for 1-1. Earlier profligacy atoned for in bizarre circumstances.

“Then up pops the much criticised Perez. Hapless on Saturday, but a hero tonight. Ritchie has pinged a wonderful pass, Atsu centres and the Spaniard did the rest. Brighton stunned.

“Eight clear of third. It’s happy Mags tonight, even if we have been through the wringer.”

Jamie Smith:

“Get in! GETTT INNN!!!!

“Absolute shocker of a decision to give a penalty for the sort of 50/50 incident that has never been give as a pen in the history of football.

“Evened out by Diame scoring the spawniest goal I’ve ever seen and what an ending!

“Murphy made a huge difference and I’d like to see him given a start at Huddersfield, where the pressure will be entirely on the home team. Bring them on!”

Kevin Christie:

“Woo! Very professional performance and an absolutely massive win – showed great desire and determination to stay in it after Brighton’s early goal.

“Huge slice of luck just when we needed one most.

“Fair play to the lads for keeping their heads and grinding out the win – special mention for Darlow.

“Pleased that Atsu ended up with two assists too because he was having a nightmare.

“Tempting to wonder what might have been if we had gone for it more often this season… QPR 6-0, Norwich 4-3, tonight’s turnaround….Anyway, that’s for another day!

“Rafa and the boys got it right tonight! If we can manage a win on Sat we’ll nearly be home and dry! HWTL!”

Paul Lyon:

“Get in!!!

“Great response from going a goal down, especially as the decision to give the penalty was dubious to say the least!

“The best team won, in my opinion made harder by the ref (as per) but that result is a show of how resilient we are.

“We smelled blood and went for the kill, some managers would have been happy with a point but not Rafa, always thinking how to win a game.

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“Rafa has just executed the best tactical plan of his time at the Toon.

“Thoroughly deserved as well.

“Humongous three points – obviously, but as we know nothing is done yet

“Just enjoy the week people.”

Toon Bano:

“What an absolute cracking result from an absolute clanger from Rafa.

“You could praise his subs but that would be false.

“Who in their right mind would ever choose Gouffran & Diame as your focal point in the biggest game of the season with Perez, Murphy & Mitro available?

“Diame is possibly the worst player I have ever seen play for Newcastle Utd. He makes Sissoko look like Vieira.

“I’m gonna enjoy this win for but I have to say if we weren’t coming off the back of 4 years of Pardew, Carver then McClaren, Rafa would be under deserved scrutiny for his seemingly attempts at trying his best to mess this straightforward promotion up, with bizarre team selections and needless negative strategy.

“Just enjoy the win. What a finish Diame…….

“Howay!!!!!!!!!”

Ben Cooper:

“Before the game I wanted us to really go for it and see these games as an opportunity to go clear at the top.

“Thankfully, in the last 10 minutes we did and that was all it took. Gouffran up front on his own tho? I mean howay.

“All in all, our flukey goal evened out their flukey one and a superb one won the points. Magic. Magic hat. Magic defence today too.

“A big step towards promotion achieved.”

Nat Seaton:

“Get In!

“Thoroughly deserved, thought we played the best we have done for a while.

“A few drinks in Brighton now then home tomorrow, what a night…”

Jamie Swan

“A thoroughly deserved away 3 points at supposedly the best of the rest this league has to offer.

“A kick in the nuts for Chris Hughton, but his side didn’t deserve their lead with a pathetic penalty against.

“We’ve been on the wrong end too many times now but the lads reacted great.

“Aye a flukey equaliser but we had a couple of absolute gilt edge chances that we should have buried.

“Big Murphy made a difference and we won it with a great goal.

“All stats in our favour. Delighted for Rafa and the boys.

“Suicide tablets back in the drawer.

“Good night all.”
