Alan Smith has given his verdict on whether Aston Villa or Newcastle United are the bigger club.
By the way, this is former Leicester and Arsenal striker Alan Smith, not the former Newcastle United midfielder one.
It is also Alan Smith who grew up supporting Aston Villa, having been born just eight miles from Birmingham.
The player turned pundit says ‘you have got to say the might Villa’.
Smith acknowledges that both are ‘huge clubs’ but that whilst Newcastle have the fans and the far superior stadium, Aston Villa win the argument on trophies won and their overall history.
Alan Smith talking to Sky Sports:
“As a boyhood Villa fan, you have got to say the mighty Villa, haven’t you?
“They are two huge clubs.
“Newcastle get 55,000 every home game, magnificent stadium, but in terms of history Villa win it easily, with trophies won.
“European Champions League champions, the FA Cup.
“It has been a long, long time since Newcastle have won anything, so I have to go with Aston Villa.”
