For so many years it has been a case of total disillusionment with the FA Cup (indeed any Cup) not rated a priority by Newcastle United/Mike Ashley.
Even seasons where Newcastle were more than safe by the turn of the year, would still see Alan Pardew following orders and playing a weakened team.
It is now five years since United even got past the third round, so safe to say expectations have been crushed in that time period.
In these years under Ashley, the question of not trying in the cups has been an open sore, with many supporters asking just what is the point if you aren’t even going to try and do your best in the cup competitions.
Falling into the Championship and Rafa Benitez nailing his colours to our mast, has certainly moved the goalposts.
What do Newcastle fans see as the biggest priority?
Some fans have said in recent years that they would even take relegation if it meant winning something…this is what it does to you when you support a mad club like Newcastle United.
Even Birmingham City, our opponents tonight, won a trophy (League Cup) only six years ago…and got relegated.
I was asked this week by somebody who isn’t a Newcastle fan, whether I would take a guaranteed FA Cup final and place in the play-offs, or guaranteed promotion and our usual early FA Cup exit?
I had to stop and think because usually in these hypothetical questions, taking one option means no chance of the other, but a chance of FA Cup glory AND going up via the play-offs (and potentially another Wembley trip…).
It certainly got me thinking – but what would you choose now that we have Rafa Benitez in charge?
