Andros Townsend is dominating the headlines for Newcastle fans and it is a similar case in South London.

Crystal Palace fans wondering if the winger is set to return to Tyneside and more importantly for them, who they are going to get in to replace him.

They see players such as Robbie Brady and Robert Snodgrass as big upgrades on Andros Townsend and seem pretty unanimous in wanting rid of their summer signing.

However, what is even more interesting/bizarre, is that the vast majority are at the same time convinced that Townsend will bounce back to form if he is back in a black and white shirt, despite disappointing throughout his five months at Selhurst Park – only one Premier League goal and a single assist.

Sam Allardyce subbed the winger in his first four league games in charge before leaving him out altogether on Saturday, Andros Townsend only getting onto the pitch for the final two minutes straight after Everton scored their 87th minute winner.

Crystal Palace fans comment on possible Andros Townsend transfer to Newcastle via their top message board Holmesdale.net:

‘Happy to drive him there myself. An abject waste of time and space. West Ham game was his worst yet (and boy that is an incredibly low bar!!)’

‘Has to be a good deal to bring more money in and get another fresh face.. would like Snodgrass!’

‘I forecasted this quite some time ago. He is very much admired there as the Newcastle fans think he worked tirelessly to try to save them. Something hasn’t been right at Selhurst and his heart is clearly not in it.

I suspect he will do very well for them again and next season when they come back up. Best for all concerned I would think.’

‘Reports suggest Newcastle willing to offer between£8-10m.

Why do we seem to buy high and sell low?’

‘Because he hasn’t done very well. I wouldn’t take him on a free.’

‘Hope it happens! Would love to get Brady or snodgrass in with the money.’

‘How did he ever get chosen to play for England ahead of Wilf. I’d be happy to take a loss on him, just to get him off our books. We don’t need lazy players when we’re fighting relegation.’

‘I think the alarm bells are a bit clearer now in hindsight. Pardew wanted names, names, names. We need positions covered by players with integrity and a point to prove and a determination to prove it.

Some of the new players with a point to prove aren’t determined enough.’

‘Please be true. I’d kick him up North harder than one of his blasts over the bar when a goal down.’

‘Can see this happening. Townsend clearly isn’t interested in playing for Palace. Just runs around to keep away from our fans or to keep warm!

I bet if Newcastle buy him he will immediately start whizzing down the wing, fizzing over lots of crosses or cutting in and having a few shots.

Just like we thought he would do for us!’

‘Start of the season, I thought we did some good business apart from selling Gayle. On paper, we shouldve had a better starting 11 than seasons before, but it just hasn’t happened.

I like the names we’re being linked to now. I would take Evra, Jenks and Van Arnholt and sell Townsend and then Benteke in the summer.’

‘I would be happy for Townsend to leave but only if they pay us what we paid them.’

‘Only Townsend himself may know why he is motivated there but not with us.’

‘Maybe he’s the disruptive influence in the dressing room ruining the morale. He looks the type to moan contantly over f*** all.’

‘Let Geordies have Dross Townsend back but only in a swap deal for Dwight Gayle who we should never had sold in the first place.’

‘I’d go for that!! Can’t see it though…the guy’s absolutely smashing the top scorer list.’

‘It’s such a strange one. We all thought it was a great deal when we bought him and now he’s going to be sold back to them for less!

Plus Gayle has been an absolute steal.

Hindsight would say crazy crazy. But at the time it looked like Palace that got the best deal.’

‘Why would Newcastle even entertain this on current form?’

‘Would be delighted to never see the tosser in a Palace shirt again.’

‘I like it when he:

  1. a) demands to play on the right wing
  2. b) gets his opportunity
  3. c) takes the ball past the defender
  4. d) realises he can’t cross with right foot
  5. e) cuts back to use left
  6. f) defender knows this and dispossess him
  7. g) Puts hands on hips, puffs his cheeks out and looks confused
  8. h) repeats 10 times per match’

‘If Townsend wants this himself, then its going to happen quicker. This is better for Palace and better for Townsend. Win-win situations dont come along very often and this is one of them.’

‘Send him back to Newcastle rats sinking ships and all that s***e. Something not right with him. Not trying hard enough .’

‘We need to ship him out as his attitude is not helping the dressing room.

It says a lot about him that he quickly jumped ship when the Toon went down and now wants to jump ship here when things go wrong.’

‘Unless I’ve read the signs wrong it seems to me that Allardyce has alluded to Townsend having a bad attitude when I’ve seen his interviews.’

‘If Newcastle are willing to pay anywhere near what we paid for him then I would be more than happy for him to go.

Bar one game against stoke city he has looked lazy, disinterested and well… s*** to be honest.’

‘He has commented that ‘the left wing at Newcastle is a great place to be’ so one wonders why he left the bloody North in the first place? To enhance his reputation, maintain his England place? Who knows or even cares.

Looks like a loan till the end of the season and I bet he will soon be flying up and down that left wing giving Rafa & Fat Ashley his all, chucking in crosses galore, having the odd shot (on target as well!) maybe even tracking back and attempting the odd tackle? (maybe that’s going to far)

Very disappointed and frustrated with Townsend as he is a gifted footballer who just doesn’t seem to be bothered with us in SE25.’
