Steve McClaren reacts to Tom Ince transfer to Newcastle reports

This midweek brought claims of an £8m deal to take Tom Ince from Derby to Newcastle and now Steve McClaren has responded to the transfer speculation.

When the media reports came out, we featured comments from Derby fans regarding the potential deal, with Steve McClaren echoing many of their views.

The £8m figure was seen pretty unanimously by fans as unrealistic in today’s market, even though Derby paid less than £5m only 18 months ago, and the Derby boss thinks the same.

Steve McClaren says ‘£8m might get Tom’s right foot’.

As Derby’s star player it must be doubtful whether McClaren/Derby would contemplate any sale of Tom Ince, unless it was really silly money (whatever that is these days?!!).

However, Steve McClaren admits that his star man has gout ‘great ability’ and is in all but name a ‘Premier League player’.

With eight Championship goals already from the wing/midfield and double figures in each of the last two seasons, it looks as though one way or another, Tom Ince will be in the Premier League next season.

Whether that is with Newcastle United, Derby County, or somebody else, remains to be seen.

Steve McClaren talking to the Derby Telegraph and asked about a potential Newcastle deal for Tom Ince:

“£8m might get Tom’s right foot.

“At the the present moment, we will treat that speculation with that comment.

“Tom has got great ability – he can score and assist.

“He should be a Premier League player.

“He has had opportunities and you have seen the fight he has, he wants to get back there.”
