They’ve done it yet again, despite spending much of the last hour defending, Rafa Benitez and his players made it a remarkable win number 10 from the 14 away trips so far.
The points count now stands at 31 away and 24 at home, though United do now have three Championship games in a row at St James Park – Rotherham then followed by QPR and Derby.
Two quality goals were rare moments of attacking joy from Newcastle United at Griffin Park but if marks (and points) were awarded from grit and determination, as well as dealing with adversity, then the visitors were well worth the three points.
Though Brentford Head Coach Dean Smith was very much in the ‘hard done’ camp – claiming poor decisions by the officials as well as domination by the home side for most of the game.
The ability to manage throughout a game has always been said to be one of Rafa’s strong points and dealing with three injuries in key positions was a challenge.
The Rafa Benitez reaction though was to say ‘I am quite old, so I have had this kind of situation where you lose three players to injury’.
It may not have been pretty at times but great to see the players reacting to both the situation and their manager, little doubt they are playing for Rafa Benitez…not that there was any doubt!
Brentford appear to have now added their name to the list of clubs who wonder how Newcastle have taken three points back to Tyneside.
Sounds definitely like a case of ‘The harder you work, the luckier you get’.
“We knew it could be a difficult game, we had watched them and they play good football, at the same time we (thought we) could expose them on the counter attack.
“In the first 30 minutes we had the goal and a couple of counter attacks that we could do (have done) a little bit better with.
“After that we defended against a team that was passing the ball well – we knew that it could be like this.
“We had to make the substitutions, we had to play with five at the back – we were stronger and there was a great goal by Murphy.
“I don’t think they’ll be happy with some decisions, just like us…
“Sometimes I don’t understand what is going on but we got three points and that’s it – there were a lot of fouls on us.
“We were surprised with the fouls against us but I am sure their manager will be thinking the same.
“It was a pity that we lost Dwight because he was in form but now it looks like we will lose him for some games.
“I was pleased with the players coming off the bench and also proud of the team they had to work so hard and manage the situation.
“I am quite old so I have had this kind of situation where you lose three players to injury before.
“It meant we had to defend almost with five at the back but as the game went on, you cannot stop every cross, every second ball.”
