Claims earlier on Tuesday said that Gabriel Obertan was arriving back in English football.
Just a few hours before the deadline hour, that has been confirmed.
Wigan have signed Obertan until the end of the season and are now just awaiting international clearance.
The former Man Utd player scored two league goals in his five years at Newcastle and made only 15 Premier League starts in the final four years of his five year contract at St James Park.
After Rafa Benitez paid him off early before last season finished, Obertan eventually ended up on a short-term deal at Anzhi in Russia, though when that ended last month they opted not to keep him on.
Wigan and Gabriel Obertan are due at St James Park on Saturday 1 April, though TV could change that.
