The results of the Newcastle v Birmingham player ratings.
A match where Newcastle got off to the perfect start in terms of goals, scoring after five minutes through Daryl Murphy, though Aleksandar Mitrovic picked up that nasty looking injury.
After being the better team first half, Newcastle faded in the second in a very average match. However, they live to fight another day with the replay a week on Wednesday.
As for what the fans thought, a big difference between the top and bottom performers.
Top marks given to DeAndre Yedlin (7.1), a typically energetic performance with this time a wing-back role, which can use the player’s pace and stamina to the full extent.
Goalscorer Daryl Murphy (7.0) was second top rated, as well as the goal he led the line well but could have done with better support.
Three other players managed 6.0 or better, with the other wing-back, Achraf Lazaar (6.4), showing up well – although he faded a little when United reverted back to four at the back.
Grant Hanley (6.0) did pretty well getting a rare game, whilst Aleksandar Mitrovic (6.0) was only on the pitch a few minutes.
At the other end of the spectrum, central midfielders Cheick Tiote (2.6) and Jack Colback (3.2) struggled to impress.
Whilst Matz Sels (3.5) once again looked to be lacking confidence when the ball went into the box. Vurnon Anita (4.4) was another who didn’t impose himself on the match as Newcastle struggled second half.
Captain Jamaal Lascelles (5.5) wasn’t at his best but Massadio Haidara (5.3) didn’t do too bad in the context of not playing for so long.
Of the subs, Ritchie (5.3) sparked a little when he came on and Isaac Hayden (5.2) added a little in midfield, but Yoan Gouffran (5.0) didn’t really do anything to suggest he was the answer in support of the main striker – amazingly failing to shoot from a tight angle with the goal gaping.
