Newcastle set to face Gabriel Obertan on April Fools Day

Gabriel Obertan is set for a return to English football.

France Football report that the former Newcastle player is due to sign for Wigan Athletic later today after taking a medical.

The winger will be joining on a free transfer and will sign an 18 month contract with the relegation strugglers.

Rafa Benitez didn’t take long to size up Squidward and paid him off early a couple of months before his contract was due to end in June 2016, at the same time the United boss got rid of another waster in the shape of Sylvain Marveaux.

Marveaux is currently helping Lorient on their way to the second tier of French football, Lorient currently rock bottom of Ligue 1.

Obertan later rocked up in Russia at Anzhi but after only one goal in five months and struggling to make any impression, they let him go ahead of this January transfer window.

Assuming the deal goes through without a hitch, rather appropriately Obertan will be set to face Newcastle United on April Fools Day when Wigan visit St James Park.

Obertan picked up five years of Premier League wages and in return Newcastle got two goals, whilst he only made 15 league starts in the final four years of his five year deal at Newcastle United.

The club tried to get him out of St James Park but struggled to find anybody to even take him on loan – the player said to be one of the few signings that Alan Pardew was personally responsible for when at Newcastle United.

Gabriel Obertan turns 28 in February and has made a grand total of 58 league starts in his career.

Nice work if you can get it.
