Newcastle approach Everton for Tom Cleverley – Reports

Rafa Benitez has approached Everton to ask about the availability of Tom Cleverley according to media reports this morning.

The midfielder featured in 22 of Everton’s Premier League matches last season but this time has only started four, with a solitary startling eleven place in the past eight weeks.

Central midfield is an area at Newcastle that looks to need at least one extra body because whilst Shelvey and Hayden have been key players this season, Jack Colback has struggled and the last two matches suggests far too much reliance on Jonjo Shelvey’s availability.

Whether Tom Cleverley would/could be that man is open to question, though he has played all his football in the Premier League over the past seven seasons.

The Mail say that the approach is for an initial loan until the end of the season for the 27 year old and he certainly looks surplus to requirements at Goodison Park.

This month of course is going to see Newcastle United linked with countless players so difficult to pick out what is potentially true/possible – though it does appear certain that Rafa will look to bring in some players and the loan market could well be the best chance of getting players who are better than what is currently available.

Tom Cleverley is one of those players who when he is playing for the opposition appears to do a job but doesn’t really stand out, though you would assume that if dropping into the Championship he should be able to show he is a level above.

Checking his stats I must admit to being surprised to find that he is one of those players who has somehow managed to make a half-decent number of starts for England, that you can’t really recall. The midfielder making 11 senior starts for his country and another two as a substitute, though it is over three years ago since the last one.
