Matt Ritchie says he can’t put his finger on why Newcastle have performed so well away from home.

After 12 games at both St James Park and on their travels, Newcastle have picked up 24 points from a possible 36 at home, with an incredible 28 from 36 on the road.

I say incredible because for Newcastle fans this is an unbelievable turn around, with most seasons tending to see it being a struggle away from St James Park.

After 24 goals in 72 starts for Bournemouth in the Championship, Matt Ritchie says he is desperate to improve on a return of four goals in 20 league starts for Newcastle this season.

The winger says he has ‘beat myself up a little bit about the amount of goals I have scored’ this season but hopes that Friday night’s wicked deflection against Nottingham Forest has released the logjam.

Matt Ritchie looked Newcastle’s outstanding player in the early stages of the season and let’s hope that this goal will help bring him back to that kind of form as well.

Matt Ritchie talking to NUFC TV:

“Good to get back to winning ways (v Forest), after the blip on Boxing Day.

“It (goal v Forest) was a little bit lucky but I needed a bit of luck – the team as well, as we haven’t had many things fall for us in the last few weeks.

“I’ve beat myself up a little bit about the amount of goals I have scored – hopefully that will give me the confidence to score a few more.

“I don’t think we performed on the day (home defeat v Blackburn) but we go therewith a game plan and hopefully can carry it out.

“It was good to get back to winning ways and hopefully we build on that. We have been on a good run this season and we need to continue that.

“Results have been good at home but even better away, though not sure why, hopefully we can continue our away form.

“Hopefully this can be a successful new year and one for all the people to enjoy at Newcastle United.”
