Keith Curle says he owes a ‘big thank you to Newcastle United.

Carlisle United are currently in the automatic promotion places to get out of League Two, four points clear of fourth. Playing a big part in that has been Macauley Gillesphey.

The Newcastle defender did well at the Cumbrian club last season when making 27 appearances when on loan for the season, this time around he has so far added another 22 appearances.

His half-season loan was up after being with Carlisle from July 2016 and on Wednesday it has been announced that he will now stay until the end of this season.

Able to play at both centre half and a left back, the Magpies’ defender is progressing well and Keith Curle says that Newcastle ‘know we are looking after one of their young players in the right way’.

Keith Curle:

“I have to say a big thank you to Newcastle United.

“We’ve had some very good conversations with them and it’s good to know that they know we’re looking after one of their young players in the right way.

“The lines of communication between the clubs have been excellent and that has helped us to get this sorted very quickly.

“I think they know that Macaulay will gain more by being around a squad which is looking to improve and, ultimately, fight for promotion to the next level. It’s a win-win situation for all concerned.

“We see ourselves as very much a part of Macaulay’s medium and long term development. He has some excellent attributes and he’s shown us recently that he has versatility and adaptability by playing in a role which is unfamiliar to him.

“He has an excellent range of passing and he’s learning more and more every day, which will only stand him in good stead. We like working with him, he likes working with us, and he knows he has more to give.

“He’s getting game time in a team which is competing for success at the right end of the table. I’ve said it before – he has the potential to be a very good player and we’re pleased to be able to play a part in bringing that out.”
