Newcastle United appeared to have reached stalemate in their attempts to loan Andros Townsend for the rest of the season.

Crystal Palace insisting on a permanent transfer or else no deal.

However, Friday night saw The Times break the news that Crystal Palace had approached Newcastle about the availability of Chancel Mbemba on loan for the rest of the campaign.

At the same time, they added that Newcastle had renewed their efforts to try and force a loan deal for their former winger, leaving the way open for a possible swap loan arrangement.

Chancel Mbemba has been frozen out of the Newcastle first team after Ciaran Clark grabbed his chance with both hands, the DR Congo defender starting only one Championship match (home defeat to Blackburn) since September.

As for Crystal Palace, they have the fourth worst defensive record in the Premier League after conceding 41 goals so far, one less than bottom club Sunderland.

Plus, in Sam Allardyce’s five league games in charge, his team have kept no clean sheets and conceded in every match.

Fat Sam has made clear he will try and revamp his defence with the signing of Patrick van Aanholt from the mackems already, will Chancel Mbemba also be joining him?

This is how Crystal Palace fans have reacted to the possible Andros Townsend switch with Chancel Mbemba, comments courtesy of top Palace fans message board Holmesdale.net:

‘Palace representatives discussions over a potential loan swap with Townsend. Chancel Mbemba can play cb and play defensive mid for the DR Congo.’

‘Although I want to see Townsend succeed with us, right now this swap would make sense…

Chancel Mbemba looked half decent last season, has now had over a year to get used to english football and would cost us diddily squat til the end of the season.

…and he is in the right position

Good idea.’

‘I agree.

Offers cover as Centre-back.

Not sure he could also do the job we need as defensive midfielder.’

‘Its a difficult one as I really want Townsend to succeed but its just not working out.

Problem I see is that we have better quality cover at CDM (Cabaye, Macca, Flamini & Ledley) than we do on the wing (Wilf, Schlupp, Townsend & Sako). SO unless Kaikai or Anderson are going to step up I’d rather keep Andros.’

‘But it seems this guy is really a CB, where we do need cover.’

‘I’ve had time to think about this…and yes Townsend has under-performed, but, the whole team has.

You could argue that out of the first team less so than Hennesy, Kelly, Ledley and probably about the same as Ward, Cabaye, Dann, Puncheon, maybe even Benteke.

Point is this, are we vindicating him more because he’s not been with us as long as the others?

He is an England regular, yet deemed not good enough for us?’

‘Difficult one.

He hasnt really delivered in his position, and we now have Schlupp and PVA on the left, plus Sakho and of course Zaha on the right.

Defensively Mbemba would give CB cover.

Given Sam’s emphasis on clean sheets, it may well be the right choice to make.’

‘Do this in a heartbeat. Mbemba is a better defender than we have and Townsend is not our best winger.’

‘I havn’t seen enough from JS, PVA or Sakho to suggest that we can afford to let an England winger just waltz out of the club.

However, if the plan is to keep 10 clean sheets and score 10 more goals this season then maybe we need to make a change.

Know nothing about this guy (Mbemba) but trust he’s half decent.’

‘Chancel Mbemba is a good player indeed and one who would come cheaper than normally.

Newcastle fields Lascelles and Clark there as starting center backs. I’ve seen Mbemba play last season and I liked him, despite the fact that they went down. He was also very appreciated in Anderlecht.

I don’t know what the talk about him being a defensive midfielder is. I’ve never seen him play there and I don’t think he has done it since his youth days.

I’d like Townsend to succeed too, but maybe a separation is for the best of everyone.

A player needs to be appreciated by the manager and Allardyce was just quoted saying that Schlupp and van Aanholt on the left side would be great.

Zaha will surely play, so if I were Townsend I would go somewhere where I’m wanted.’

‘My personal thoughts are that Townsend is quality. It’s playing in a team that has no confidence that is hurting him.

The two full backs aren’t helping him enough in an attacking sense because of the lack of confidence in conceding a goal, which in turn had seen townsend do far too much defending which isn’t his strong point hence the vicious cycle of making him look bad.

Really like to see him play with a PVA or Jenkinson behind him who are comfortable in attack as well as defence.

I think we’d regret him going to Newcastle, especially as he didn’t cost us too much in today’s market.’

‘Townsend is obviously very talented but in reality isn’t contributing much offensively to the team.

If Big Sam wants to play 3 at the back and is prioritising stopping goals and achieving clean sheets, he urgently needs another CB. So in this sense a loan swop makes very good sense.’

‘Quality players push on despite circumstances! Look at Wilf, he has really had to make an effort defensively and has looked our best player.

The trouble with Townsend is he doesn’t get stuck in, he shys away from tackles and is too predictable in his play. I can see why he is a bit of a journey man, bright start yet flatters to deceive.

Personally if we could do a swap I think it would be good for both parties.’
