Brentford 1 Newcastle 2  –  Saturday 14 January 2017 3pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle:

Ben Cooper:

“Another example of just how much experienced goalscorers matter in this league, step up Daryl Murphy to join the effort.

“Never mind spending £20million on Callum Wilson, Rafa should give someone like Drogba or Berbatov a million quid to get us up.

“If you know what you are doing, in this league you will score goals.

“As for the match, we were so much better than them for the first 45 minutes, we were good, they were awful, it makes you wonder why we don’t just fly into teams in this league, the game will be over before the opposition have got themselves together.

“As usual though, not enough goals when we were on top and some belief creeps in.

“We could easily have lost this game, which would have been ridiculous given the difference in talent of the two teams. We didn’t though, which is nice. 12 wins to go.

“Howay The Lads.”

Paul Lyon:

“Great result that, especially with Brighton losing.

“Don’t care how we did it, just important that we did it! A real punching the air moment when the final whistle went.

“Looking ominous when our main goal scorer went off injured but for his replacement to score the winner, shows our squad is pretty decent at this level.

“Chuffed to be back top of the league, hoping we can stay there after a run of home games coming up.

Nat Seaton:

“What a day!

“Back on top, winning away again – ten times now that I’ve seen them do that this season!

“Setback with the injuries especially with a cup match on Wednesday.

“Two great goals and loads of smiling faces…”

Scott:

“Just pure relief.

“3 points is all that mattered today. Injuries are a concern !!!!!.

“Bonus as Brighton eventually losing a game.

“Backs against the wall at times today but gotta win scruffy sometimes.”

Jamie Smith:

“Relief!

“9 minutes of injury time man!

“Bit of a mugging here but Daryl Murphy’s winner could prove so vital on a weekend when 3 of the other 4 in the top 5 lost.

“We’ve gained massively at the top of the league but it may be at a cost with key injuries.

“To put positive spin on that though, if you’re gonna get injuries, get em when the transfer window is open and your reluctant owner has just seen you labour to a lucky win.

“Hoping Gayle’s absence is very shortlived.”

Leazes Park Ender:

“A former Mackem player is the toast of Tyneside tonight. Well done Darryl Murphy.

“That was a huge goal for our football club amid a somewhat damaging game in terms of injuries.

“We’ve ended up seeing out nine minutes of added time after Murphy’s heroics. How we came through that today is beyond.

“What we got was a win and allied to a Brighton reverse we’re top again and seemingly back on track – and yet I find myself demanding that we play better.

“The Gayle injury is a worry but credit to him for getting to 20 goals – the first Toon player to reach that since some fella called Alan Shearer in 2004.

“What was clear today was that some signings are needed but we can welcome Shelvey back this week.”

George Stainsby:

“Hopefully the injuries won’t cost us or the players anything in the long term… needed that, though.

“And even though they’ve got a game in hand, I bet Brighton would rather be top.”

Toon Bano:

“Absolute cracking result. Back to the top of the league!

“Gayle going off is a big concern. We have to bring another striker in to make sure we get promoted.

“If Gayle is injured for any serious amount of time I can’t see where many goals will come from.

“Callum Wilson was on the bench for Bournemouth again today so I would put in a record transfer bid and he would definitely see us promoted.

“Plus he is quality for the Premier League for next season where Gayle still has doubts.

“Howay the lads!”

Jamie Swan

“Holy Moses!

“If there is a worse way of spending nine and a half minutes – I’m yet to experience it. Chinese thumb screws or playing kingo with catapults and conkers don’t come near.

“Not being able to see what the hell is going on in the land of technology (couldn’t make the game today) had a sweat on my tash and my back! Though not seeing red and white stripes on me telly is always a bonus.

“Thankfully Hughton’s boys got rolled over at Preston and the lads have took advantage by squeezing back in to top the pile.

“In all honesty, it sounded a struggle, more men carried off in battle than Vietnam – but we did what Rafa loves, dug deep and thank the Lord we got the goals that brought home the bacon.

“Murphy’s stats of goals to minutes played is quality.

“Hopefully all the stretchered are OK (especially Dwight!) and will be doing the dab at Tup Tup by 12 the neet.

“Merry weekend time!”
