Birmingham have been informed on Thursday afternoon that the EFL & FA have confirmed Lukas Jutkiewicz can play in the Birmingham v Newcastle match on Saturday afternoon.
The Blues’ top scorer had to beat a deadline of noon on Friday to be able to play in the FA Cup third round match.
The striker had been on loan from Burnley and after agreeing a fee, Gianfanco Zola was waiting on the player’s availability at the weekend.
Lukas Jutkiewicz has scored eight goals in 15 Championship starts (plus five as sub) but was surprisingly left out at St James Park by Gary Rowett, not appearing on the pitch until the second-half when the game was already lost with Newcastle two up, the eventual scoreline being 4-0 to the Magpies.
It remains to be seen just how seriously the two managers take their team selections at St Andrews on Saturday.
Birmingham City Official Statement:
‘Blues have today received confirmation from both the EFL and The FA which confirms Lukas Jutkiewicz’s eligibility to play matches for Birmingham City as of today’s date.
The Emirates FA Cup third round deadline of 12 noon on Friday has therefore been met and Jutkiewicz will be eligible to play in Saturday’s third round home tie against Newcastle United if selected.
The 27-year-old became Gianfranco Zola’s first signing of the newly-opened transfer window, when he joined the Club on a three-and-a-half-year deal on 3 January for a fee of £1m.
He had previously had a successful loan spell at St. Andrew’s up to that date, and is currently the leading scorer with eight goals in his 20 appearances for the Club.
His most recent strike came in the Sky Bet Championship defeat to Brentford on Monday.’
