Birmingham 1 Newcastle 1 – Saturday 7 January 2017 3pm
We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle:
“Once we got the early goal I thought we’d go on and win the game comfortably, as we have so often this season, particularly away from home. But it wasn’t to be.
“Must admit for the first time in my NUFC supporting life I don’t think I would have been that bothered if we went out.
“Don’t get me wrong, I wanted us win the game, but a draw was probably the worst outcome.
“Could do without extra games but we’re still in the cup, which you never know might help us in terms of morale and keeping the fringe players sharp.
“Hope Mitrovic isn’t hurt too badly.”
“Well, the best I can say is that we are still in the Cup!
“They had a great chance late on that thankfully wasn’t taken.
“Pretty poor match overshadowed by the Mitro injury.
“Here’s hoping we get past them at home, I’m all for a cup run…”
“A typical FA Cup clash this.
“Which used to mean two pumped-up teams battling in a tense, crackling atmosphere for a chance of glory. Now it means two reserve teams ambling their way through an unwanted game in a half-empty stadium.
“For NUFC it was a chance for our forgotten or forbidden men to stake at least attempt to earn their wages.
“Not that any of them took it, we should have won given the first 80 minutes played by the opposition, we could have lost it in the last 10 such was our slumber.
“I can’t see the replay being any different but at least it might give some legs to those who we might need in the Championship run-in.
“Unfortunate that Mitrovic won’t be one of them and the need for a back-up for Gayle now seems more pressing.
“We are still in the hat for round 4 though, which is always something to celebrate on Tyneside.
“No matter what, I would rather be in it than not – so on that count, bring on the 4th Round draw and then we can decide whether the replay is worth winning or not.”
Leazes Park Ender:
“It’s a tough stage of the season for Rafa and the FA Cup brings its own set of headaches. What sort of side to put out?
“We saw eight changes today and it has showed. Not our finest afternoon but Murphy’s goal enough to earn a crack at a replay.
“Thoughts also with Mitrovic, who was stretchered off, and we have to hope he is going to be okay.
“He feels like a jinxed player for us at times, as when he gets his opportunity he either hasn’t really taken it or has gone off early with a knock.
“That second half was grim stuff and there is some alarm in the way we played – but we’re still in the hat for now.
“The replay will have ramifications for our fixture list though. The key game against Brighton set to be moved?”
“Rafa actually played Yedlin and Lazaar as wing-backs with 3 at the back!
“Who’d have thought it?!
“On all accounts it worked well, so hopefully he will use it a lot more often.
“We all wish Mitro a speedy recovery.
“I will just say that this might push Rafa to bring in another striker to help out Gayle when he’s quiet.”
“Nobody wanted an extra game messing up the fixture list, nobody for sure wants anyone to leave the pitch on a stretcher either.
“I say that…but some absolute helmets on twitter, who call themselves NUFC fans, seemed to be cheered by a Mitro injury?
“Are you for real? I digress.
“Tiote is built like the back end of a pregnant elephant and is WAY off first team duties.
“Pleased for Haidara reappearing after his injury disappearance.
“Pleased for Murphy to get a goal and a start. Pleased for Lazaar and Hanley getting some minutes and unlike some, pleased still to be in the hat for the fourth round.
“Devastated for Mitro, hope you get better soon pal.”
