Alan Shearer has been talking about the Newcastle team that faced Oxford and the issue of clubs in general paying weakened sides.
Rafa Benitez made nine changes to his team, with only Ayoze Perez and Isaac Hayden remaining from the side that beat Rotherham 4-0 in the Championship.
Alan Shearer says ‘I don’t get and never have done, the resting of players’.
With Newcastle six points clear of the chasing pack and having a game in hand (and massive goal difference advantage) over third place Reading, Shearer thought Rafa’s team selection was ‘very, very disappointing’.
The player turned pundit says that ‘Newcastle fans travelled 250 miles down to Oxford yesterday, expecting their team to win’, only for a far weaker team than expected to be put on the pitch.
Alan Shearer talking on BBC Sport:
“It (playing weakened FA Cup elevens) shows that clubs care about money whereas fans care about trophies and that’s very very unfortunate.
“I don’t get and never have done, the resting of players.
“Yeah I think they (clubs like Newcastle who make so many changes) are cheating the fans.
“Newcastle fans travelled 250 miles down to Oxford yesterday expecting their team to win and he (Rafa Benitez) puts a weakened team out.
“They have got one of the biggest and best teams on the championship, they are six points clear with a game in hand from third, so it’s again very very disappointing.”
