The fans’ Newcastle v Burton player ratings will surprise a lot of people

The results of the Newcastle v Burton player ratings.

Whilst Nigel Clough and the media were keen to play this game up as being the biggest mismatch of all time, I think any sensible Newcastle fan knew it was likely to be anything but easy.

Despite taking an early lead the more cautious Newcastle fans were proved right, as Burton hit straight back and then after regaining the lead – Newcastle arguably spent the rest of the game as second best.

The home side racked up more shots, possession and corners (see stats below) to leave many Burton fans claiming that it was bad luck and not a superior opposition that decided the result.

These match ratings from Newcastle fans would tend to suggest that the team maybe got away with one this past weekend…

The Newcastle star man by some distance was the ultra-consistently excellent Ciaran Clark (7.5), he was the real quality at the back as United came under pressure.

Elsewhere in the team, only three other players ranked 6.0 or better, with Dwight Gayle (6.3) grabbing second place for a battling display and an excellent opening goal.

The other two to hold their own, up to a point, were Mohamed Diame and Jonjo Shelvey who each rated 6.1 by Newcastle fans. The Senegalese international scored an excellent winner whist Shelvey was behind most of Newcastle’s sparse positive moves in attack.

The other seven players in the starting eleven were all rated well below average, although none disastrously so.

Paul Dummett followed up an unconvincing performance at Wigan with another one here, to get the very bottom rating of 5.1.

Next lowest was Jamaal Lascelles (5.3) who failed to inspire and Yedlin (5.5) completed a back four that weren’t at their best, with the exception of Clark. Behind them Karl Darlow (5.8) also dipped below his usual high standards with the odd mistake.

Atsu (5.4), Ritchie (5.5) and Hayden (5.8) completed a line-up who were thankful in the end for two great winning goals, rather than a great team performance.

A bit like a number of other away matches such as Rotherham and Preston though, Newcastle just about had enough in their tank to see it through.

Below are the ratings as voted by Newcastle fans up to 10.30am on Monday:
