Results of fan Newcastle v Cardiff player ratings paint a true picture

The results of the Newcastle v Cardiff player ratings.

A strange game against Cardiff, Newcastle grabbing the early goal against a poor visiting side and then failing to make their superiority count until Yoan Gouffran added another just before half-time.

A second-half following where Newcastle could have made it four or five but at the same time got really sloppy and could have handed at least a point to Neil Warnock and his team.

Maybe it sums it up that your man of the match was Ciaran Clark (7.3), as usual Newcastle’s best defender and with the ability to also bring the ball out of defence.

Next best is Jonjo Shelvey (7.1), the only other player to rate above 6.7, the midfielder yet again at the heart of everything positive Newcastle did going forward.

As for those who struggled, Ayoze Perez (5.3) was by some distance seen as the weakest link by Newcastle supporters. I can barely remember him being involved in the game, doing very little when attacking and giving marginal help to the defence.

I don’t think there has been another game this season where most of the players have been given such similar average ratings, evaluated as not great but not shocking.

All the other eight who started the game were rated between 6.3 and 6.7.

Scoring the winning goal, Gouffran (6.7) was seen as the best of an average bulk of the team, whilst Isaac Hayden (6.3) was the weakest of the average players.

In between you had Lascelles, Darlow and Atsu 6.4, Dummett 6.5, with Yedlin and Mitrovic both 6.6.

Average ended up being good enough to beat a desperate Cardiff outfit but Rafa Benitez will be demanding higher standards when NUFC visit an in-form Leeds next time out.

Below are the ratings as voted by Newcastle fans up to 9.30am on Sunday morning:
