The results of the Newcastle v Leeds player ratings.

An intriguing breakdown, with one star player and then five a side in terms of good/very good performers and those that were poor to average.

No prizes for guessing that it is Dwight Gayle (8.4) who was your man of the match. His two goals may have been simple finishes but they were just reward for his industry, alertness and all round classy performance. Admirable considering over four weeks off and his altercation in Liverpool the previous weekend.

Of the five rated good/very good, interesting to see four of them were in defence, the exception being Jonjo Shelvey (7.5) – the Newcastle midfielder showed himself a class above those trying to break up his game.

Karl Darlow (7.7) made a few smart saves but it is his handling and willingness to come for difficult crosses that is really stamping his authority.

Centre-backs Lascelles (7.5) and Clark (7.5) both put in commanding displays, whilst Vurnon Anita (7.2) showed quality at both ends of the pitch on his return. The former Ajax man setting up the brilliant and killer second goal.

As for those average or less, Paul Dummett (6.7) was the odd one out in defence. Did ok and was reasonably solid but still a feeling that he is a step down from the level of the rest of the back four.

Colback (6.9), Ritchie (6.7) and Gouffran (6.6) all played a part without excelling, whilst it was left to Ayoze Perez (6.2) to prop up the rest of the team. Rafa looking spoilt for choice in choose between Mitrovic and Gayle but struggling to get the perfect back-up playing just behind.

Very professional performance and efficiently disposed of another in-form team, a great bonus to see Newcastle fans not getting too carried away just yet.
