Hull 1 Newcastle 1 (Hull win on pens) – Instant fan/writer reaction

Hull 1 Newcastle 1  (Hull win on penalties) – Tuesday 29 November 7.45pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle:

Leazes Park Ender:

“Matz Sels has sadly cost us the chance of a semi-final shot, though his colleagues taking the spot kicks surely need to look at themselves.

“It was a gallant effort tonight but that club’s almost cursed ability to snatch disappointment from the jaws of euphoria. reared its head once more.

“I just hope this isn’t the start of a wobble. Friday night will be tough with 120 minutes in the legs.

“I’ll get slaughtered for saying it but the last thing that out promotion push needed was a two legged semi-final in January.

“That said, we maybe should have got past that Hull side tonight.

“We’ll just have to soldier on.”

Jamie Smith:

“Absolutely the worst possible outcome.

“Having blown the Blackburn game, I’d be very surprised if we get anything at Forest after that 2 hours plus.

“The poor quality of penalties is incidental, it’s a lottery at the end of the day.

“What worries me is how utterly abysmal our final ball has been these last two games. Time after time shocking balls were floated neatly to opponents or straight out of play and the amount of poor efforts sailing over the bar needs work on the training ground.

“Added to the unacceptable switch off for their goal, this game has left a nasty taste in the mouth, and a real fear the confidence has drained from the squad.”

Scott:

“Cup game gone, forget about it. Penalty lottery.

“League is priority, nice cup run while it lasted.

“But let’s get back to what we need – PREMIER LEAGUE.”

Nat Seaton:

“It was like being stuck in a NUFC time warp, same old same old.

“No need to start listing 10 men, crap pens, 1-0 up, the whole night on the pitch (and off with some questionable choices imo!) was the problem.

“Off on the journey home now with that horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach that Newcastle has a habit of setting off – I’m absolutely gutted.”

George Stainsby:

“You can’t score and then let in a goal seconds later.

“Hopefully, this goes down to experience and we can tighten up, recover, and sort out Friday against Forest.”

Paul Lyon:

“Should’ve made the most of our 1st half dominance.

“2nd half was plain poor.

“Great effort in the 1st half to score but to concede so early was a sucker punch.

“Pens… well it would be a hell of a job to lift that curse.

“Hopefully the lads can lift themselves to get 3 points at Forest.”

Toon Bano:

“How many kicks to the balls do Newcastle fans have to take?!!

“How the hell do you throw the game so quick.

“I’m beyond raging – beyond sickened.”

Jamie Swan

“Darlow in goal, NUFC win one nil.

“Simples.

“30 odd shots on goal, blew it through poor finishing and a Sels flap…

“Worst pens I’ve ever seen. Blew it, you daft Bastards.”
