Steve McClaren is set for a shock Championship return to Derby County.

Sky Sports report that the disastrous former Newcastle boss is currently in talks with confirmation of his return due to happen before this weekend’s fixtures.

The latest in a string of job failures saw Steve McClaren sacked at Derby County after his team dramatically dropped out of the promotion race in the second half of the 2014/15 season.

Then somehow Mike Ashley and Lee Charnley thought it was a great idea to employ a failed Championship manager, simply because he agreed to having no real say at the club, including on transfers in and out.

The Mirror however, claim that Steve McClaren will be returning in a secondary role, with Chris Powell to be named as Derby manager.

Fans of many other clubs will rest a bit easier either way, just so long as McClaren is snapped up after a series of Championship rejections since his sacked in May.

Recently, we published a series of comments (read them HERE) from the top Derby County fans message board and surprisingly, many of the supporters were more than open to a Steve McClaren return, no doubt heavily influenced by the failure of Nigel Pearson and the sacking of Paul Clement, although the latter did appear to be harshly treated when based purely on results.
