The Bolton fans voted Sammy Ameobi their man of the match on Tuesday night.

On loan from Newcastle, Ameobi scored the only goal (watch it below) of the game in the fourth minute, as Bolton beat Blackpool in the Checkatrade Trophy,

It was the first win for Bolton in any competition since August and Sammy Ameobi said he needed this performance after playing poorly in Saturday’s 2-0 home defeat by Oxford.

In the final year of his contract at Newcastle United, Shola’s younger brother desperately needs to find a run of form if he is to find a new club.

Sammy Ameobi:

“It’s great to open my account but the most important to thing is to get the win and to get the points.

“I have been getting a lot of shots off so it’s typical that the first one I get is a flicked tap-in.

“I needed that sort of performance. I didn’t play very well at the weekend and needed a bit of a confidence boost. Hopefully that can give us more confidence and I’ll be able to get a few more goals.

“I’m most used to playing on the left, it’s the position I was brought up playing in. It’s where I’m most confident but I am very happy to play wherever the manager wants me to play. The more versatile I am, the better and the more opportunities I’ll get to play and make a difference.

“Hopefully I can build on the positives from this game and take it into next weekend.

“It’s been tough since the new guys came in but it’s great to get a win. We linked up well in attack and it was good – it’s what we needed as there wasn’t enough of it against Oxford.

“Hopefully tonight’s performance can bring confidence to the boys. It’s our first win for a while and we now need to go again against Swindon Town and put things right in the league.

“A few of the lads who didn’t play will come back in so hopefully we’ll be able to put in another good performance and take three points.

“We’ve got a very good squad with a lot of quality in different positions which allows the gaffer to rotate the side. It bodes well for us with the games coming thick and fast.

“All the lads played well tonight and there’s going to be competition for places heading into the weekend. That’s a good thing. We need to keep pushing each other to get into the team so we can get the best out of the squad.”
