Rafa Benitez has been nominated for the Championship Manager of the Month award for September.

Rafa is up against three others, Sheffield Wednesday’s Carlos Carvalhal, Norwich City’s Alex Neil and Reading’s Jaap Stam.

Newcastle beat Derby, QPR and Norwich, plus a draw at Villa, with only the one defeat against Wolves.

United taking 10 points from a possible 15.

Carlos Carvalhal and Sheff Wed picked up four wins and a defeat, giving him/them 12 points out of 12.

Norwich and Alex Neil matched Sheffield Wednesday, winning four and then just that one loss at St James Park.

Finally, Jaap Stam’s Reading ended with the same return as Newcastle, a record of won three, drawn one, lost one.

Though these awards aren’t always decided simply by who picked up the most points, hard to see Rafa Benitez getting it against two managers who both picked up two more points than Newcastle.

Though in the Spaniard’s favour is the fact that the games included those exhilarating 6-0 and 4-3 wins over QPR and Norwich respectively.

Benitez has been selected by a panel comprising former Ipswich Town and Scotland manager George Burley, Sky Sports pundit and ex-West Brom, Sunderland and Wolves forward Don Goodman, League Managers Association director Olaf Dixon, Sky Bet football trading manager Paul Lowery and EFL Marketing Director Drew Barrand.

The winner of the award will be announced tomorrow (Friday 7 October).
