Interesting to see this Championship team of the season (so far).

After 11 games it is a bit early to say with any confidence exactly which players will come through and prove the top performers over 46 matches – but interesting to see who people believe are the ones to excel at the minute.

There is one Newcastle player making this Talksport Championship team and that is Jonjo Shelvey.

The eleven players Talksport have selected as the top performers, includes only one player from league leaders Huddersfield, nobody from second placed Norwich, but three from fourth placed Brighton.

From a Newcastle perspective, I think Matt Ritchie deserved to be included, but after that I can’t really claim with any confidence that anybody else in black & white should have been.

Dwight Gayle is probably the next best but despite scoring seven goals, he has veered between the superb with his goals against Reading & Bristol City, whilst also missing a lot of easier chances, such as at Aston Villa and against Norwich – when he could have had a hat-trick before even scoring the first goal of what proved to be a…hat-trick!

The relative success of Newcastle’s season so far, has been more about the whole team and indeed the whole squad.

Plenty of players have contributed without any other real major stand out candidates – the likes of Lascelles, Hayden, Gouffran and others, all putting a shift in.

The Championship Team of the Season (so far) as chosen by Talksport:

David Stockdale (Brighton)

Chris Gunter (Reading)

Pontus Jansson (Leeds)

Lewis Dunk (Brighton)

Christopher Schindler (Huddersfield)

Anthony Knockaert (Brighton)

Conor Hourihane (Barnsley)

Jonjo Shelvey (Newcastle United)

Tjaronn Chery (QPR)

Tammy Abraham (Bristol City)

Scott Hogan (Brentford)
