News on Monday afternoon that Newcastle striker Daryl Murphy has picked up a calf injury.

Martin O’Neill revealed that the former Ipswich forward had been forced to drop out of the squad and return to Tyneside, no details yet as to how serious the injury is.

At the start of September Daryl Murphy was celebrating after scoring his first goal for Ireland, the striker’s late goal against Serbia securing a 2-2 draw after coming off the bench.

Murphy has experienced a strange existence as a Newcastle player so far.

He played the full 90 minutes when Newcastle beat Wolves 2-0 in the EFl (League) Cup but he hasn’t even made it onto the bench in any of United’s Championship games, never mind getting onto the pitch.

Ireland play two World Cup qualifiers in the coming days: home to Georgia on Thursday and away to Moldova on Sunday.

After this latest international break, Newcastle face five matches spread over a fortnight, so Rafa could well have been counting on calling on Daryl Murphy in rotating his squad.
