Jamaal Lascelles “It is not just quality and talent that we have got”

Jamaal Lascelles was in bullish mood after grinding out a 1-0 win at Rotherham.

Newcastle heading into this latest international break in third place after also beating Norwich in the past week.

United find themselves a point behind Norwich and three behind leaders Huddersfield, as the promotion race begins to take shape.

Whilst former Newcastle midfielder Kieron Dyer has over the weekend predicted Newcastle and Norwich to ‘run away with the league‘, Jamaal Lascelles is taking a more pragmatic approach – just like his manager.

The Newcastle Captain saying last season United lacked a little bit of ‘heart, fight and desire’ but now that these qualities are self apparent in games like Saturday’s at Rotherham, they can beat everybody.

According to Jamaal Lascelles, those qualities added to the talent at the club which makes the team/squad a potent force.

Jamaal Lascelles speaking to Football on Five:

“It’s massive (Newcastle’s fighting spirit), it just goes to show what the boys have got.

“It is not just quality and talent that we have got, it is heart, fight and desire.

“I think we lacked a little bit of it last season but the players that Rafa has brought in, plus the way some of the boys have turned it around this season, it’s excellent.

“If we play with that kind of quality and determination, on the day we can beat anyone.

“In the Championship, momentum is massive and we have had an international break before, then we came back and beat Derby and QPR, so I don’t see why a little break won’t help.

“Some of the lads are carrying a few knocks here and there, so I don’t think it (the break) will harm us in that way.

“We don’t want to get too carried away – obviously it would be great to get promotion but we’ve just got to stay focused on the next game, take it step by step.

“We’re not really looking at the long run, we are just taking the games as they come.”
