Ian Holloway has been previewing the Newcastle v Ipswich and in the process revealed who the most expensive signing was, that he ever made as a manager.
The manager turned pundit says that Dwight Gayle was his biggest ever purchase, with the media claiming the fee was £4.5m when he signed for Crystal Palace in July 2013.
Ian Holloway only lasted another three months at Palace after that signing, leaving by ‘mutual consent’.
In that time Dwight Gayle started six Premier League matches and scored two goals, sadly five of those six games were defeats.
Ironically, the only PL game Holloway won with Dwight Gayle starting was when the striker scored in a 3-1 win over Sunderland.
Ian Holloway thinks that Ipswich will make it difficult as no Championship club has conceded fewer goals than them – but despite that he says he would be ‘stunned’ if Dwight Gayle doesn’t score.
As well predicting Gayle to add to his 11 goals so far, Holloway predicts a 2-1 win and another three points to Newcastle.
Ian Holloway talking to Sky Sports:
“Mick McCarthy will be relishing this challenge of trying to stop the in-form team in the division.
“If anyone can derail Newcastle’s winning run it’s Mick.
“They have the joint-best defence in the Championship with Brighton, conceding just nine goals, but you just can’t bet against Dwight Gayle at the moment.
“He’s already scored 11 league goals and I’ll be stunned if he doesn’t add to that this weekend.
“He was the most expensive player I ever purchased as a manager when I took him to Crystal Palace and I’m not surprised to see him banging them in.
“He’s pure quality.”
