Championship form table suggests different threats emerging for Newcastle

The Championship form table makes interesting reading ahead of Newcastle’s trip to Barnsley.

It was always going to take a while before we could gauge who the main promotion rivals were and as well as the actual Championship table after 12 matches, maybe this form table over the last half a dozen games is even more informative.

As you can see, Newcastle are currently third in the Championship form table, with 13 points from 18, the defeat to Wolves and draw at Villa the only blemishes.

Norwich fans were pretty savage in their assessment of manager Alex Neil after the 4-3 defeat at Newcastle but with another couple of wins since then making it five in the last six, it looks clear the Canaries are going to be serious contenders for the promotion spots.

In contrast, Huddersfield are maybe levelling out, after going unbeaten in their first six matches they have now lost three of their last six.

However, two clubs who just missed out on promotion last season are now really picking up. Brighton are unbeaten with four wins and two draws in their last six, whilst Sheffield Wednesday beat Huddersfield away on Sunday to make it four wins out of six.

A surprise package in the form table is Leeds in fourth, with four wins in six it suggests that Garry Monk is maybe performing a bit of a resuscitation act on a Leeds United outfit who have been shambolic in recent years under their owner.

As for tonight’s opponents, one point from the last five matches sums up their falling away from the early season form and the last remnant of that better form is their 4-0 away win at Wolves, achieved on the same night as Newcastle won 6-0 at QPR.

A little difficult to believe that tonight will be a goalless draw…
