Ayoze Perez accepts that Saturday was a big one for him.

Failing to really impress this season and even though Newcastle won when the Spaniard played against Brentford in the previous home match, he still hadn’t really fired.

Maybe surprisingly, Ayoze Perez was recalled to face Ipswich and was celebrating a goal inside the opening minute, then doubled it after an assist from Matt Ritchie – before reversing roles for the third and final goal.

No wonder Ayoze Perez declared afterwards that ‘The mood is really nice’ in the dressing room, though he insists that all the players are only focused on winning each game.

The former Tenerife player says that with a big quality squad he knows he and all the other players have to ‘fight for our position’.

Perez saying that the early goal gave him and the other players the confidence to play their football, though Rafa Benitez has said that more goals should have been added when Newcastle were so dominant in that opening period.

Preston are a team on the rise and after beating both previous table toppers, Norwich and Huddersfield, in the past few days – Ayoze Perez says the team have to be at their best to keep this latest five match winning run going.

Ayoze Perez talking to NUFC TV:

“Really good performance from the team, a really important win and we are still up there.

“We need to keep going in this way.”

‘After going top on Tuesday, how important was it to keep that going?’

“It was really important. The gaffer told us that this has to give us more confidence, we have to win if we want to be there.”

‘A big day for you personally?’

“Yes, we all know we have a big squad with quality and we have to fight for our position. So I was really focused on the day but the most important thing is the team.

“It was really quick (first goal) for me and even more for the team. It gave us that confidence to keep playing passing the ball.

“Always important when you score so early like that, three more points.

“After Gouff’s touch I can see the ball coming to me and I didn’t think too much, just putting it into the net.

“It was a tough game, like all of them, but to get the second goal was a crucial moment and it gave us a little bit of breath. Matt Ritchie assisted me and then I did the same to him. The important thing is the winning way.”

‘What is the mood like in the dressing room?’

“The mood is really nice.

“You can enjoy the dressing room, everyone is focused on what we are doing but we are good guys, Everyone is happy and confident, we have to keep pushing.

“We have Preston in the Cup and then the League, we have to keep going forward in the Cup and then see what happens.”
