Aston Villa confirm former Newcastle trio won’t be interviewed for di Matteo’s job

Interesting to hear that Aston Villa have confirmed that they aren’t considering any of three former Newcastle employees to replace Roberto di Matteo, although one former NUFC man is under consideration.

BBC Sport state that they have been informed by club officials that Aston Villa have a 10 man list of possibles, which includes current caretaker and former Villa & Newcastle number two, Steve Clarke.

Other candidates they want to consider for the post include Sean Dyche, Lee Johnson and David Wagner

Aston Villa caretaker boss Steve Clarke is on an initial list of 10 candidates to succeed the sacked Roberto di Matteo as the Championship side’s manager.

However, Villa have also confirmed to the BBC some of those NOT under consideration, these including Ryan Giggs, Tim Sherwood, former Newcastle managers Steve McClaren and Sam Allardyce, plus one-time NUFC assistant Nigel Pearson.

Interviews are set to start this week but hands on owner Tony Xia won’t be involved initially, as he is on business in China.

However, when he returns next week, Xia is then set to be involved once club officials have narrowed it down to a final three.

Interesting to see who they do go for and very difficult to see why Sean Dyche would think Villa is a good move instead of staying at Premier League Burnley where he has done such a good job.

Whilst with Huddersfield looking good at the top of the Championship thanks to some signings, interesting to see if David Wagner would see Villa as a sensible progression.

Here’s hoping that Tony Xia sees the error of his ways and appoints the obvious candidate, Steve McClaren.
