Newcastle 6 Preston 0 – Tuesday 25 October

The two Managers made 16 changes between them as Newcastle United strolled to an easy win in a contest between the two reserve teams.

What it tells us about Saturday’s Championship clash is probably very little but what it does tell us is that Newcastle are into the quarter-finals!

Only Colback, Yedlin, Dummett and Ritchie survived from Saturday’s 3-0 win over Ipswich and it is a testament to the strength of the squad that it was difficult to see any difference in the control Newcastle had of this game.

United scored some good goals but the six could have easily been 12, with Hayden striking the woodwork, Diame missing an open goal and as the stats show below – a shot count of 25 v 1 in Newcastle’s favour tells you everything.

As soon as Mitrovic headed home confidently from Ritchie’s 19th minute free-kick, it was a game with only one clear winner.

A red card for Alan Browne after what looked a cowardly elbow in Colback’s face only confirmed that, whilst Shelvey then coming on for the injured Geordie midfielder after only a half hour, sealed Preston’s fate.

They then spent a desperate hour chasing shadows as Shelvey and Ritchie in particular showed their class.

Hopefully two goals for both Diame and Mitrovic will do the pair of them the world of good.

The Serbian striker provided plenty of entertainment, as his stupidity also brought a yellow card when celebrating what was a very good second goal as he put two defenders and the keeper on their backsides before sliding it home.

However, his embarrassing strop (see image above) when Ritchie wouldn’t let him take the penalty was what really stole the show.

Eleven goals without reply starting last Tuesday and two Championship wins & into the last eight of the League Cup, in Rafa we trust.
