In advance of Tuesday night’s league cup-tie with Wolves, Rafa Benitez has revealed that he has a totally fit squad available to choose from, with the exception of three first team squad players.
Long-term injury victims Rob Elliot and Rolando Aarons are still working back to fitness after their respective injuries and won’t be back any time soon.
However, the third player ruled out tomorrow is Jesus Gamez.
It is easy with such a big squad to think nothing now of players not being in the matchday 18, with the likes of Daryl Murphy and Achraf Lazaar having been missing out as Rafa eases them in.
Jesus Gamez played the full game in the last round against Cheltenham and then made a substitute appearance four days later, replacing Vurnon Anita for the final 18 minutes when Newcastle beat Brighton 2-0.
In these past three weeks Jesus Gamez hasn’t made any matchday squad and now it turns out he has been suffering from a calf injury.
Rafa Benitez saying that after a few more days his medical staff will be looking at how close he is to returning.
The 31 year old Spaniard has looked quite a character and a feisty defender in the brief action we have seen him in competitive matches and pre-season friendlies. So a bit of a shame he has had this setback and fans denied the chance of seeing what he can do against Wolves and in recent Championship matches.
“We still have Rob Elliot, Rolando Aarons and Jesus Gamez out.
“Jesus Gamez has an issue with his calf.
“We will have to keep treating him for a few days and see how he reacts.”
