The Newcastle match ratings v QPR.
Jonathan covered the match at Loftus Road on Tuesday night for us and you can read his full analysis of the game when it goes up later.
In the meantime, here are his Newcastle match ratings v QPR for each NUFC player and what they contributed.
Sels – 8. Didn’t have anything to do but 500 minutes now without conceding a goal, at any level, is very impressive.
Anita – 9. Absolutely fantastic tonight: cool, calm, composed and looked the real deal at full-back.
Lascelles – 8. Strong as an ox, did nothing wrong. Will need to play an important role in keeping his teammates’ feet on the ground in the coming weeks.
Clark – 10. As an Ireland fan, I can safely say that wasn’t Ciaran Clark out there tonight, must have been his twin brother! Defended well at centre-back, did well at left-back, scored a goal, set up a goal and looked like he really enjoyed himself.
Dummett – 8. Another solid performance at full-back. A really solid defender at this level.
Shelvey – 10. When Shelvey plays well, Newcastle play well. It’s that simple really. I still think he’s the best player in this team by a million miles (along with Ritchie).
Hayden – 8. Looks really assured and mature for his age. As usual his passing and ball control was spot on but he also breaks up play really well and has a lot of composure and confidence about him.
Ritchie – 9. He did just about everything but score a goal. Everything he did was perfect: first touch, corners, crossing, work rate. A real classy player and in my opinion, there won’t have been too many better signings made in the UK this summer than Ritchie.
Perez – 10. This display was really needed for Perez, it was a big chance for him tonight and he grabbed it. He ran the QPR defence absolutely ragged all night. He’s probably that one yard of pace away from being a really top player.
Gouffran – 8. This is more like it, showing that his recent resurgence may not be a one-off and that he could be back for good! Or at least for the rest of the season.
Mitrovic – 8. Oh how I’ve missed him. Although he missed a hatful of chances tonight, he did score and his all round play was brilliant. Also looks fitter, leaner and quicker than last year.
Hanley – really smart of Rafa I think to put him on the bench, giving him as much game time as possible. A goal will do wonders for his confidence, even if he is now our 4th choice central defender.
Yedlin – was a late sub, but again, looks very sharp and certainly isn’t there to make up the numbers. Good competition between him and Anita.
Atsu – Not a bad sub to bring on at all! Looked really sharp and was unlucky not to get a goal. Probably the last thing a championship defender wants to see coming on after 70 minutes.
The fans – 10. Again. The best fans in the country bar none. As a Newcastle fan, you don’t expect anything from the team when travelling away but 100%. However, there are a few games, when you make an extra effort, usually midweek, or a long trip like Brighton where you expect the players to really turn up.
Too often in the last 5/6 years we have turned up on days like today only to be disappointed. The two FA Cup Brighton fixtures, Swansea away, Southampton, to name but a few – but tonight was such a pleasure to watch and for 3,000 fans to make the trip and make the noise they did…
The fans really deserved that performance tonight, it’s been a long time coming.
